Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to use this site and to stay and eat with us. Here is what we have done, what we know is not yet right, and how to get hold of a person.
Statement prepared: 24 July 2026
What we are aiming for
We are building this site to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. That is our target, and we have designed and built to it from the start.
We are not claiming we have got there. This site has not been independently audited, and we are not claiming full conformance with WCAG 2.2 AA. What follows is an honest account of where we think we are.
What we have done
- A skip-to-content link on every page, so keyboard users can jump straight past the navigation.
- Visible focus outlines everywhere, so you can always see where you are when tabbing — including a lighter outline on the dark navy sections, where the standard one would disappear.
- A keyboard-operable menu. The mobile menu button reports its state
with
aria-expanded, Escape closes the menu, and focus returns to the button rather than being stranded. - Reduced motion is respected. If your device is set to reduce motion, we switch off smooth scrolling and cut animations and transitions right back.
- Self-hosted fonts. Type is served from this site rather than a third-party font network, so text renders quickly and reliably on slow connections and does not depend on another company’s server being up.
- Colour contrast checked against AA. Text and interface colours were measured, not eyeballed; one muted grey that only reached 4.3:1 was darkened until it passed.
- Proper structure. Real headings in order, landmarks, meaningful link text, alternative text on images that carry meaning, and decorative images hidden from screen readers.
- Menus as web pages, not PDFs. You can zoom them, read them with a screen reader and use them on a phone.
- Built to work on a phone, at large text sizes, and with very little JavaScript — the site works if scripts fail.
What we know is not right yet
- The embedded Google map on the Find Us page is a third-party component and we do not control its accessibility. Our full address, phone number and travel directions are written out in text beside it, so you never have to use the map.
- The room booking system is somebody else’s website. When you check availability you leave this site for a third-party booking engine, and we cannot control how accessible it is. If it does not work for you, ring us on 01460 208414 and we will book the room for you at the same rate.
- No independent audit has been carried out, and no testing with assistive technology users has been done. [TO CONFIRM: whether an independent accessibility audit and user testing will be commissioned before launch.]
- The site is still being built out. New pages and photography are being added, and it is possible something slips through — a missing image description, a heading out of order. Please tell us if you find one.
Getting to us and being here
The Crooked Swan is an old building in the middle of Crewkerne, and the honest answer about physical access is that you should ring and ask so we can tell you exactly what to expect.
[TO CONFIRM: physical accessibility of the building — step-free entrance, accessible WC, whether any bedrooms are on the ground floor, stairs to the rooms, hearing loop, accessible parking and drop-off. This section should state the facts plainly, including the ones that are inconvenient.]
If the website does not work for you
You never have to use the website to deal with us. Ring 01460 208414 and we will book a room or a table, read the menu out, take a function enquiry or answer a question. We are open 8am–11pm, every day.
Telling us about a problem
If you find something on this site you cannot use, we would genuinely like to know. Email info@crookedswan.com or ring 01460 208414. Tell us the page and what went wrong, and we will reply as quickly as we can and fix what we can fix.
We take our duties under the Equality Act 2010 seriously, including making reasonable adjustments. If you are not happy with how we have responded, please say so — we would much rather hear it than not.
